'Book of Mormon' status uncertain after theater fire

NEW YORK — “The Book of Mormon” faces an uncertain future following a Monday morning blaze that damaged Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
“Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the cast and company of The Book of Mormon and our audiences, performances for ‘The Book of Mormon’ will be cancelled on Tuesday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 6,” a representative for the Tony Award-winning show announced Monday after firefighters tapped down the three-alarm electrical fire. “The show will continue to work with theatre owners, ATG Entertainment, the FDNY, and other relevant parties to assess the damage resulting from a fire at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre this morning.”
That statement said ticket holders will be notified by point of purchase for exchanges or refunds.
Monday’s fire broke out on the one day when the show was dark. Production will shut down for “an unknown period of time” due to substantial damage to the theater’s fourth floor, according to The New York Times.
What that means for ticket holders beyond May 6 was unclear early Monday evening.
“The Book of Mormon” opened at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in March 2011. That venue has been operating as a playhouse at 230 W. 49th St. for more than a century. It adopted its current name in 1959, according to the landmarked building’s website. The theater seats approximately 1,100 guests.
Theater operators told the Daily News shortly before noon that the theater was safely evacuated, but the situation was still developing.
Tickets for Tuesday’s 7 p.m. performance were available on the venue's website late Monday afternoon. They priced between $65.75 and $221.77. That was no longer the case Monday night.
The Daily News described “The Book of Mormon” as “blissfully original, irreverent, outspoken and hilarious” when it opened more than 15 years ago.
