Where does it all end, and what can we hope for?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: I wish I could go back to the old days when the world was more peaceful and more kind. Is there any turning back, or do we simply accept the inevitable? The news carries the headlines of bombs falling in Ukraine, the idea of nuclear bombs wiping out the world, and bunker bombs that detonate other weapons. Where does it all end, and what can we hope for? – D.B.
A: Jesus said that as time draws to a close, there will be wars and rumors of wars. Why does God allow this? So that the Gospel will be preached around the world as a witness to all the nations (see Matthew 24). Jesus also said, “See that you are not troubled” (Matthew 24:6, NKJV).
Why does He say that? To keep our eyes on Christ and our hope in Him, not the culture, not the day-to-day events, but on Christ, who will one day bring peace to this earth. What must we do to experience that glorious moment? From ancient days, God proclaimed, “Prepare to meet thy God” (Amos 4:12, KJV). This is His message still today. We are to receive Christ and turn our lives to Him, live for Him, and proclaim His message of forgiveness of sin and hope for the future that rests solely in Him.
The human race continues its futile search for peace in all the wrong places, placing its hope in governments, personal successes, and religion. The Bible says concerning mankind’s futility, “The way of peace they have not known” (Romans 3:17, NKJV).
When Jesus was on Earth, He showed love, gave comfort, performed miracles, and brought healing. The people’s response was to oppose Him. What mankind needs is to accept Christ, to know His eternal peace. “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1, NKJV). This is the ray of hope that shines as an ever-brightening beam in a darkened world.
